How Notification Works
You will receive a letter indicating your student's assignment during the notification period for any choice selection round in which you participate. You may also check your student's status online using the Choice Selection application during the notification periods and other announced times. Please note that you cannot change your waitlist status using the Choice Selection application. To be removed from the waitlist, please see the instructions below under "The Waiting List".
Not Participating in Choice
If you are happy with the default assignment sent you last fall (based on your current school assignment or feeder pattern), you will receive a letter confirming that assignment in mid-May.
For Magnet and Choice Schools
You will receive a letter in the mail indicating whether your student has been placed in one of your selections or not. You may also check your student's status online using the Choice Selection web application during the notification periods and other announced times. If you were not selected for your first choice school, the letter will indicate your position on the waiting list for that school, in case seats open up in one of the subsequent choice rounds.
For Leadership Academies and Early Colleges
You will receive a letter in the mail indicating whether you've been selected for a Leadership Academy/Early College or not. If you were not selected for your first choice school, the letter will indicate your position on the waiting list for that school, in case seats open up in one of the subsequent choice rounds. You will not be able to check your Leadership Academy/Early College status using the Choice Selection web application.
If you are selected for both a Leadership Academy/Early College and a magnet program, you must notify the Office of Student Assignment by 5:00 p.m., February 14, which school your student will attend.
The Waiting Lists
There are waiting lists for first choice magnet schools, first choice proximity schools, leadership academies and early colleges.
Choice Round 2 and Waiting Lists
Participation in proximity selection in Choice Round 2 will remove your student from their first choice waitlist position from Choice Round 1. Participation in magnet selection during Round 2 will remove your student from their first choice waitlist position from the Magnet Round. This happens even if you reselect your first choice school during Round 2.
Participation in only the Proximity part of Choice Round 2 will not affect your student's magnet waitlist position. If your student is on an early college or leadership academies waiting list, that position is not affected by your participation in Choice Round 2.
How the Waiting Lists Work
1. Parents can notify the Office of Student Assignment at any time to have their student’s name removed from the waitlist. A written request is required to remove a student from the waitlist. This can be done through an email to studentassignment@wcpss.net, a fax to 919-431-7302, or a written request by mail or in person to The Office of Student Assignment, 5625 Dillard Drive, Cary NC 27518. Unless you remove your student's name from the waitlist, they remain on the waitlist until June 29, 2012.
Written notification requesting removal from the waitlist, must be received in the Office of Student Assignment according to the following timeline:
- By May 25 for the May 29 waitlist processing run
- By June 12 for the June 13 waitlist processing run
- By June 26 for the June 27 waitlist process run
2. Unless a written request has been received by the Office of Student Assignment before the dates listed above, parents will be notified by mail if a vacancy opened up and their student is removed from the waitlist and assigned to their first choice school. This means the student will be released from their previous assignment to receive placement into their first choice school.
3. Siblings applying to the same school will be considered as follows (updated 3/28/2012):
- If one sibling comes to the top of the wait list and can be seated, then the other sibling will also be considered for a seat if there is one available (regardless of their place on the waitlist).
- If all siblings cannot be accepted at the same time, all siblings will remain on the waiting list for each of their grades and will be accepted when there is a vacancy for all siblings.
4. The waitlist will be dissolved 5:00 p.m. June 29, 2012.
